Lost Season 4 Finale
For the benefit of those that have not seen the finale I will put this all under a cut so that I don’t spoil it for anyone that has not seen the episode and wants to.
After 101 days of some of the strangest moments of their lives 6 of our favorite cast aways made off the island. For 3 seasons we wondered if the survivors of crash of Oceanic flight 815 would ever make it off the island that is seemingly invisible to the rest of the world. Then in last years season finale we got the partial answer with the reveal of the flash forward.
We knew from that episode that at least Jack and Kate made it off the island and it gave us more questions. Did anyone else get off the island? If so, who else? And the question that has been on everyone’s mind for a year. Who was in the coffin?
Through out season 4 we received more and more flash forwards. We eventually found out who did make it off the island. A group of survivors that came to be know as the Oceanic 6; Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun and Aaron. They had become celebrities of a sort because the entire world thought that everyone on the plane had perished. The 6 lived lives full of lies (tongue twister there) by not revealing that there were still people that survived.
Kate and Jack assumed raising Aaron until something we yet know about caused Jack to want to go back to the island. Hurley has ended up back at the Santa Rosa Mental Institute and has seemingly regular conversations with the late Charlie who gives Hurley premonitions of sorts. He also enjoys a good game of chess with everyone’s favorite holy man Mr. Eko. Sayid had joined forces with Ben in hopes of bringing down Charles Widmore, who seeks the island, while Sun has bought into her father’s company and seems to want to side with Widmore over the lose of Jin.
Through the entire finale this year we are treated to flash forwards of all of the members of the Oceanic 6. In almost all of them they speak of the death of a one Jeremy Benthem. This is the man in the coffin. He is the man that only Jack went and saw in the funeral parlor. He is the man that Kate is sickened by the thought that she would actually go and see. He is the man that visited Walt. He is the man that’s death concerns Sayid to the point where and breaks Hurley out of Santa Rosa to go into exile. But you are thinking, “Who is Jeremy Bentham? I haven’t seen or heard of this person before.”
The revealing of the person in the coffin was promised by the writers of the show this season. They wanted it to be such a surprise that they filmed 3 different versions of 3 different people in the coffin just in case leaks got out and they wanted to change it.
The build up in the episode was incredibly intense and it made you think of who could it possibly be? I’ll be honest that I thought it was going to be Ben based on Sayid’s reaction to the news of the death. But when Jack heads back to the parlor at night and breaks in he is met with the man that always has a plan. Ben tells Jack that if he ever wants to go back to the island they all have to go together. That means Jack, Kate, Hurly, Sayid, Sun, Aaron AND Mr. Jeremy Bentham, better known as John Locke. The reveal of Locke’s lifeless body in the coffin sent chills down my spine. Actually I just got the chills again just thinking of it again.
So this brings you to think of many more questions. How are they going to get everyone to want to go back? Kate has no desire to go back and she will not let anyone get Aaron. Sun is hell bent on revenge on Jack, whom she blames for Jin’s death. And Locke, they need to take the body of Locke with them. Does this mean that Locke will come back to life on the island? Who knows.
But along with this huge reveal there were some other great moments as well. We find out that Charlotte has some connection to the island. The island was successfully moved by Ben. Michael had a somewhat redemptive story. The mercenaries are dead. Desmond is finally reunited with Penny.
And in typical Lost fashion we are given more questions while answering other ones. I know some people find that frustrating but I love how it always keeps you thinking. We now have 2 seasons left before the series is over. I’ll admit at times during season 2 and the beginning of season 3 I was getting bored but this entire season was great and the finale was superb. I honestly can’t wait until next January or February for the next season to start. This is in my opinion one of the best shows ever on television and the reason I have not missed an episode since I started watching it.
