I got it new in '07 for $25,000 (not counting the $3,000 tax credit) and have never once regretted the purchase. But then again, I didn't buy it to be green. I bought it because it was a perfect fit for my needs/wants in a car (And, no, I don't think I'm starving terrorists by driving it). First and foremost, I'm in sales and drive quite a lot for work so I wanted something that made good gas mileage. Check. Secondly, I'm often tasked with picking up and delivering merchandise and wanted/needed something with a hatchback and plenty of room for storage. Check. And last, but certainly not least of all, I also use my car as a mobile office so there's a lot of sitting around in it as well. The Prius is perfect for this as the engine works like a generator kicking on to charge your batteries when needed and then switching back to battery power so you can charge your phone, enjoy your stereo and air-conditioning without wasting any gas. I typically average around 42 MPG according to the onboard computer, but considering how much time is spent parked out in the field somewhere I think that the actual numbers are much higher. Even based on that 42 MPG number, I've already saved over $4,200 compared to the average passenger car in the US (source: http://www.bts.gov/publications/national_transportation_statistics/html/table_04_23.html), and over $5,400 compared to your Nissan Frontier (source: http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/Nissan_Frontier/Performance/). This brings my net cost from $25,000 down to $16,600 compared to your Frontier, and those savings will only continue to grow once it's paid off in November. I love my Prius.
